Mentoring

1. Can I choose who my mentor will be?
You can to a certain extent. When you go through a program, most of the time staff will select the mentor most closely matching the skills, abilities and personal characteristics that will work best with you and your needs. But you will have an opportunity to meet with their recommended person and ensure the match is comfortable to you before anything is finalized.

2. What can I offer as a mentor to someone else?
You probably have a lot to offer. You have the unique experience of growing up in today's society and understanding how peer pressure, school pressures, relationships, work, family and other factors can affect our lives. You have your own life experience of accomplishments and setbacks that have inspired you to be who you are today. If you are a good listener and and reliable, those are two important aspects of mentoring that will help a young person.

3. What mentoring programs are there in King County?
Check into more than one and see which program seems best for you:
E-mentors (Orphan Foundation of America - www.ofa.org)
SUCCESS - Youth Eastside Services
VIBES - Bellevue School District
United Way Mentoring Roundtable
YWCA - Girls, Inc.
YMCA Middle School Mentoring
MESA - Mathematics, Engineering & Science Achievement
