My skills and abilities

1. How can I define my job-related interests better?
Ask yourself what you love to do and what you hate to do. Write down what your favorite subjects in school are and why they are your favorite. For example, you may enjoy drama but why? Do you like performing in front of others? Do you enjoy creating stories and characters?

Think about what you are good at and what your favorite activities are. What jobs appeal to you and would make you happy? Who are the public figures you admire?

2. How can I find job descriptions for my interests?
Once you narrow down the professions you are interested in, you can find out what types of job descriptions exist in those fields. Look in career directories at the local library or your school. Think of employers in the profession and visit them or look up the description of their departments and staff online. For example, if you think you would like to work for a newspaper someday, go to the Seattle Times/PI or Eastside Journal websites or offices and you can find people who work as editors, photographers, writers, graphic artists and managers. See what their job descriptions are and see if it's a job you really want to pursue.

3. How can I find out what skills are required for a job?
You can find out information about jobs at a number of online resources. Check into the websites listed in the Career Information section of Resources & Help.
