Job Shadowing
Job
shadowing is a way to follow someone around in a job. It's a way
to see how a company works or what a day in the life of a particular
job is like.
Who
allows job shadowing?
Many employers don't
mind if you shadow an employee for a day. As long as the employee
agrees to be shadowed by you, it's as easy as just getting approval.
Employers like to see someone interested in their work or operations
and it gives you a networking opportunity to meet with other employees.
An exception would be working environments which may present danger
to you or anyone else who didn't know exactly what they were doing.
For example, if you were interested in construction, it is unlikely
you would be able to job shadow just anyone at a construction site.
National
Job Shadow Day
February 2nd of every
year is National Job Shadow Day. Look out for promotional flyers
about it and get involved. Many employers volunteer to make themselves
available on that day. If there is a particular job and employer
you have in mind, then call them directly and ask to see if someone
at the company would be open to being job shadowed for a day.
