Job Shadowing

Job shadowing is a way to follow someone around in a job. It's a way to see how a company works or what a day in the life of a particular job is like.

Who allows job shadowing?
Many employers don't mind if you shadow an employee for a day. As long as the employee agrees to be shadowed by you, it's as easy as just getting approval. Employers like to see someone interested in their work or operations and it gives you a networking opportunity to meet with other employees.

An exception would be working environments which may present danger to you or anyone else who didn't know exactly what they were doing. For example, if you were interested in construction, it is unlikely you would be able to job shadow just anyone at a construction site.

National Job Shadow Day
February 2nd of every year is National Job Shadow Day. Look out for promotional flyers about it and get involved. Many employers volunteer to make themselves available on that day. If there is a particular job and employer you have in mind, then call them directly and ask to see if someone at the company would be open to being job shadowed for a day.

2.What are some examples of job shadowing?

You don't have to be any particular age to ask about job shadowing. It's an opportunity for you to check out a number of interests to see if it's the kind of job you want to pursue later on. Check with your career counselors or advisors to see if they have a list of any companies in your area that have allowed job shadowing before.

Have you ever taken a job only to find out it wasn't what you thought it would be? Job shadowing is a great way to see for yourself what a job is like before you take steps to get hired into it. Perhaps you know what job you want but are unsure which employer may be the best to work for. Think about job shadowing someone at several employers and compare your experience in their working environments.
